The image of a hero-policeman who sees all the dirt and problems surrounding him, but does not give up and does not slip into cynicism, is felt as a breath of fresh air against the background of oppressive “Methods”, popular prints “Traces” and shameless “Policemen from Rublyovka”.
I don’t know how consciously, but he was made as clear and archetypical as possible for the generation of the 2000s – Danila Bagrov’s intonations are constantly visible in his voice, and his honesty and willingness to stand between evil and his hometown are rooted not so much in Western comics as in “Streets of Broken Lanterns”, and there already in the epics. Igor Grom performed by Tikhon Zhiznevsky is a pleasant hero in all respects, not without weaknesses and cockroaches, but therefore alive and real. In the early comics, during the era of the Plague Doctor arc, Thunder was a flat and not-so-cute character. Major Grom himself became the embodiment of this approach. The masks of robbers from the chase scene, the decor of Igor Grom’s apartment, the overvalued shawarma, the soundtrack (an explosive mixture of modern works, songs from Soviet cartoons and covers of the classics of Russian rock), an underlying dislike for everything Moscow – every detail of the local “Gottemburg” is associated with something familiar and understandable.
The same cultural code, which we did not expect from Andreasyan, is constantly read in Thunder. And at the same time – a 100% domestic product. The props, special effects specialists and colorists did a good job – the film looks like an expensive Hollywood project.

The visuals of Major Thunder are excellent: you can see how the film crew plays with the camera, trying to make each shot as stylish and interesting as possible, and on occasion is not too lazy to remind that we are watching a movie comic strip. Igor Grom recalls in conversations past cases, which can be read about in old issues, one of the characters purposefully cosplays Lex Luthor from the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, and the editing makes such a stunningly beautiful cut of the process of knocking out testimony from various criminals that somewhere with envy, one Guy Ritchie is crying. Moreover, they are built organically – not just to be, but strictly in their plot-based places.

The film is filled with references of various levels – there are easter eggs for connoisseurs of Bubble, DC and Marvel comics, for connoisseurs of Russian films and TV series, and for geeks in general.
Here, a maniac can fry a victim to a crisp on the air and escape safely, the death of characters is canceled after a minute of screen time, and pretentious dialogues are replaced by jokes about shawarma – and it all looks not just organic, but downright stylish.

This is a city of grotesque and contrasts, where the police sit in a huge, like a railway station, a historical building, from the windows of luxurious skyscrapers you can see a huge dump within the city limits, and armed bank robbers cannot be stopped by all the royal men – but they are successfully caught by a brave lone hero. Local Petersburg has much more in common not with the cultural capital of Russia, but with Gotham. “The Plague Doctor” is the purest comic strip from the beak of the mask to the tip of the cloak, which not only realizes its nature, but relishes it in every frame, on every page of the script. But the promises hanging in the air took on a real embodiment, when professionals who were really burning for their work stood behind the camera, and the script was based on, if not the best, but still a real Russian comic strip.
